The sports car was badly damaged when it was involved in the smash at 10.20am today on the A538 Wilmslow Road, but the 23-year-old footballer was not hurt.
His car crashed in the tunnel which takes traffic under the airport runways between Wilmslow and Hale, Cheshire.
The Portuguese star was able to get out of the crashed car and showed no sign of injury. He was being spoken to at the scene by police investigating the incident.
Ronaldo has been linked repeatedly with Real Madrid to the extent that officials from the Spanish club have even publicly claimed to have secured his signature. However the forward this month denied he would make any move away from Manchester.
Nevertheless, the European Footballer of the Year remains a divisive figure amongst United supporters, many of whom regard recent displays of petulance as evidence of his annoyance at being denied his wish of a move to Real.
The player’s name is no longer sung by the United fans and he was afforded only a lukewarm reception when presented with the Ballon d’Or on the pitch prior to last month’s Champions League tie against Aalborg.
It has even been suggested that United only called on previous Ballon d’Or winners Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton to present Ronaldo with the award to avoid an embarrassing silence inside Old Trafford.
Ronaldo insists, however, that he has overcome the negativity since returning from ankle surgery in September.
